Mojo’s Epulis

Mojo was recently diagnosed with a growth on his gums called an Epulis.  An Epulis is a mucous cyst that is a painless, thin sac on the inner surface of the lips or gums.  It contains clear fluid.  The literal translation is “gum boil”.    Most often benign, these do have a chance to grow back.

He was able to eat fine but we noticed that it kept growing…so we decided to take him to the vet.  This is the before picture:

After removal the gum area looked like this:

Yikes, Mojo. I know you said it doesn’t hurt, but it looks like it does. I hope everything else is going well and you are just hopping along and happy.

Gum Boil? Yuck! Any idea what causes it? Looks like something we definitely want to try and avoid.

The vet just called and confirm it was benign. We were instructed to apply a plaque prevention medication in two weeks to prevent build up after his cleaning.

The vet said it was an acute case of gingivitis. We were instructed to brush his teeth as well. His diet consists of mainly hard kibble. We’ll probably move him up to an advanced nutritional kibble. There is dog toothpaste. Kong toys are good, but Mojo doesn’t like toys at all.

Maybe Jerry can add a dog mouth health section to the shop for dog toothpaste, etc.
